2008


Eddy Grant
A superb show from the pop reggae star, backed by the ten-piece Frontline Orchestra. The move from Hall 1 to the smaller Hall 2 meant Eddy and the band could interact with the crowd far more closely, and made for a seriously fun (if decidely uncool) night. The Sage, Gateshead, 1 July 2008.

Gregory Isaacs

Tarantism, The Splitters and The Symptoms

Pama International
The hard-working Trojan Records band in the North East for another lively show after their success at the Boss Sounds festival a couple of years ago, courtesy of the Jumpin' Hot Club. Support band Rebelation's tour bus broke down, so Stalawatt provided the early and late vibes. The Cluny, Newcastle, 9 March 2008.

Findin' It
Opening night of photographer Carlos Pequenino's new exhibition, with music from Drummed Up and The Baghdaddies, and reggae sounds from Lionsden, Randy Dread and Stalawatt. Star and Shadow Cinema, Newcastle, 15 February 2008.

Iration Steppas
The mighty Iration Steppas in a usual year 3000 style, with dubstep and stuff from Hatcha and Crazy D, Exodus, Dynamix and Funk Ethics. Plus drum n' bass from Phobia and DJ Steppa in Room 2. World Headquarters, Newcastle, 7 February 2008.

Bob Marley's Earthday Celebration
Four rooms of reggae, jungle, dancehall and acoustic music celebrating Bob's 63rd earthday. The main room featured locals Ashram with Rob the Rub and a special three hour set from Planetman and the Internationalz. The jungle room had Congo Natty with Top Cat and Souljah, and support from Curves regulars. Stalawatt, Dr Qzo, Ms MQ and Birdman ran the dancehall room, while The Emperor's Dentist ran an acoustic jam session in Room 4. Stalawatt and friends
Stalawatt in session at Fusion on Saturday nights
Our fourth annual Christmas party, featuring nothing but the finest roots rocking reggae dancehall from the Stalawatt crew and our regular guest selectors Lionsden, in aid of local refugee support groups. Fusion, Newcastle, 21 December 2007.

Boss Sounds festival
The Jumpin' Hot Club's third Boss Sounds festival, with shows from some of the biggest names in the history of reggae over two nights. The first night featured legendary guitarist Ernest Ranglin, Max Romeo, former Paragon John Holt and the Cool Ruler Gregory Isaacs, backed by UK rhythm twins Mafia and Fluxy. The second night featured Dennis Alcapone, Dave Barker and Winston Reedy, Ken Boothe, Horace Andy (again with backing from Mafia and Fluxy), plus the godfather of ska, Prince Buster with Delroy Williams and the Junction Band.

The festival was hosted by Massive Attack's Daddy G who also featured at night-time parties alongside Trojan sound system. Café bars across the city served Jamaican food from guest chef Agnes Offiong with a musical accompaniment from Stalawatt and Lionsden, who also entertained the back room crowd at the main event. Mark Henderson

Zion
The north east's nine-piece tribute band on a two-hour multimedia journey through Bob Marley’s musical history, covering all his classic hits plus many more tracks, accompanied by cinematic visuals. Tyneside Theatre, Newcastle, 31 October 2007.

Rockers
Probably the second most famous Jamaican film (after The Harder They Come), screening as part of a season of Jamaican cinema alongside heavyweight sounds from Dubjon and guest dubstep DJ Baloo outta Brixton on the Big Bear system. The Star and Shadow Cinema, Newcastle, 20 October 2007.

Linton Kwesi Johnson
The innovative and influential dub poet performing a spoken word show as part of the Durham Literature Festival, alongside new voice Daljit Nagra. Gala Theatre, Durham, 11 October 2007.

Third World
Jamaica's longest-serving self-contained band launch the Jumpin' Hot Club's 2007 Boss Sounds festival. Warm-up by Stalawatt. The Sage, Gateshead, 6 October 2007.

The Aggrolites
LA's dirty reggae band continue their punishing tour schedule with their first headline show in the city. The Ska'd for Life crew carried the early swing. The Cluny, Newcastle, 18 September 2007.

Easy Star All Stars

Countryman
The first in a series of Jamaican films, with Dubjon and guests spinning reggae and dub either side of the screening on the Big Bear system. The Star and Shadow Cinema, Newcastle, 20 July 2007.

Yellowman
The original and still the king of the dancehall Yellowman in his Newcastle debut, with a storming set backed by Sagittarius band, plus early vibes from Stalawatt and an impromptu session with deejays from Edinburgh's Project Bonafide after. Pama International and the Dub Pistols
Trojan Records' soulful ska band, their first signing in thirty years, back in the region after throughly enjoying themselves at last year's Boss Sounds festival, and later on Terry Hall's Dub Pistols on the main stage at the Middlesbrough Music Festival. Middlesbrough, 3 June 2007.

Lucky Dube
The Orange Evolution festival features South Africa's reggae king, with an electrifying two hour show. Lucky’s a huge draw, so this was a very rare opportunity to see him in a venue as intimate as the Cluny. Good to see the room properly rammed! With a warm-up and warm-down from Stalawatt. Boss Sounds Festival, Day One
A storming day of reggae from the Jumpin' Hot Club, featuring multi-talented UK musician, producer and engineer Dennis Bovell and his Dub Band, who also provided the backing for sets from lovers rock star Janet Kay and dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson. The legendary Horace Andytore the place apart as the day's headliner, backed by the UK's hardest riddim section, Mafia and Fluxy. Dub inna Club
With Curves exploring the history of drum n' bass in the main room, the back room (actually, upstairs) reverberated to the reggae beat as Disruptor (Lion's Den), Papa S (Stalawatt), J Selecta and Qzo (Inna Dub) and Calculus (Pangaea) put it down. Jerry Dammers and Owen Gray
Two deejay sets from the ex-Special, 2Tone founder and anti-apartheid campaigner Jerry Dammers, sandwiching a special appearance by the legendary Owen Gray, showing just why he's known as the sweetest voice of Jamaica. Mikey Dread

Boss Sounds festival
A celebration of the history of reggae music presented by the Jumpin' Hot Club, featuring stellar live performances by roots legend Johnny Clarke, the godfather of rocksteady Alton Ellis and originators The Skatalites, plus DJ sets from ex-Special and 2Tone label founder Jerry Dammers, the mighty Trojan Sound System and boss selector David Rodigan - along with an early warm-up from locals the Inna Dub crew and, of course, Stalawatt. Dancehall star Eek A Mouse didn't make it due to visa problems, but that didn't spoil a wicked days' entertainment. We're looking forward to next year! Dancehall Queen
First in a double bill of Jamaican movies, presented by the Tyneside Cinema in collaboration with the Jumpin' Hot Club. A comic melodrama with a scorching dancehall soundtrack, this was a rare chance to see one of Stalawatt's favourite movies on the big screen. Newcastle, 5 November 2005.

Sly & Robbie
The Riddim Twins show why they're renowned not just as the best rhythm section in Jamaica, but probably the best in the world, laying down some seriously tough drum n' bass behind a full band. Trombonist Nambo handled most of the vocals in the dubbed up first part of the show (though Robbie touched a verse or two) before Bunny Rugs came onstage to front the latter part. Stalawatt provided the early vibes in the Jumpin' Hot Club's first reggae show at the region's new, acoustically brilliant music centre. The Sage, Gateshead, 25 June 2005.

Barrington Levy
Wicked, wicked show from a true superstar, touching all his big songs over an hour and a half of pure dancehall vibes which showed that he can still rock a crowd. A real coup for the Jumpin' Hot Club. With support from Stalawatt. The Cluny, Newcastle, 12 June 2005.

Women in Waiting
A Jumpin' Hot Club event showcasing the talents of some of Jamaica's most outstanding female artists, featuring a superb headlining performance by the Empress of Reggae Marcia Griffiths, showing exactly why she's been one of reggae's biggest stars for over 40 years, plus deejay Lady G rocking the mic, and newcomers Brick & Lace with a little bashment vibes. Jazz Jamaica All Stars
Two shows from the All Stars at the inaugural Gateshead International Jazz Festival. Early evening saw members perform alongside local youth ensemble Jambone in a free concert, followed by the full band coming together again for a late-night party featuring a Motown flavoured set. The Abyssinians and Dillinger
A stunning Jumpin' Hot Club double-header in a jam-packed Cluny, featuring deejay Dillinger followed by a truly sublime performance from roots legends The Abyssinians. With live backing from the Free People band featuring saxman Dean Frasier and trombone from Nambo, and a warm-up session from Stalawatt in a roots rocking reggae style.
