One Love party, 15 December 2004A big thankyou to everyone who came down to Stalawatt's One Love party at Chambers bar, 15 December 2004! The event, which we believe was the first reggae night ever held in Newcastle's Bigg Market, was a great success. Entrance fees raised £135 in aid of local refugee groups. Greedy G kicked the night off with a rare remix of Elvis Presley's Singing In The Chapel on the Wailers' Selassie Is The Chapel riddim (geddit?), followed by a wicked selection of revive alongside a few more recent tunes. Lil' Joe came with more rocking revive and some heavy dubs, which tested the PA, and then Jon P made a surprise appearance with another roots and dub set. With local street performers flinging fire outside the venue, Stalawatt closed the night with a selection of new music on an easy skanking tip. With the crowd reluctant to leave at the end of the night, Chambers' management invited us to do it all again in January, so check the Reggae in Tyneside listing for details - we'll see you there!
The organisations supported by the One Love party include the West End Refugee Service, operating in Newcastle, and the Trinity Community Association, based in Gateshead. Both organisations offer refugees and asylum seekers the support they need as they begin to settle in the area, providing free secondhand clothing, befriending, information and advice as well as emergency relief funds for those suffering extreme financial hardship. The money raised at the One Love party will help both organisations continue to provide these vital services. Special thanks go out to Queen B, Adam K and Stevie Bear, Chambers staff and, of course, our guest DJs.
